Choosing God's will in marriage is one of the most important decisions any Christian will ever make. While education, career, and financial decisions shape our future, the choice of a life partner often determines the direction of an entire lifetime.
Many young Christians sincerely desire a godly spouse, yet they struggle to distinguish between what their hearts want and what God desires for them. Feelings can be powerful, appearances can be convincing, and emotions can cloud spiritual judgment. But as Scripture reminds us, God's ways are always higher than ours.

Looking back at my life as a single lady, I have made countless decisions—some easy, others extremely difficult. I have made choices concerning my education, friendships, career, spiritual life, and many other aspects of my journey.
However, none of those decisions compared to the challenge of making the right marital decision.
I know many young people are currently standing at this same crossroads. That is why I have decided to share my experience, hoping it will encourage someone to choose God's will above personal desires.
Oh, forgive me—I haven't introduced myself.
My name is Elizabeth, though most people simply call me LizBae.
ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD
For several years, I had secretly admired Matthew.
While I was studying Mass Communication, Matthew was the outstanding student in the Department of Communication and Performing Arts at one of Nigeria's leading private universities. We attended the same institution, and he was admired by almost everyone.
To me, he represented excellence, intelligence, good looks, and godliness.
He appeared to be the complete package.
When he invited me to Shoprite at Ring Road, Ibadan, for lunch, I had no idea my life was about to change forever.
As we sat together enjoying our meal, he looked into my eyes and proposed.
I was completely overwhelmed.
Without hesitation, although my voice trembled with excitement, I confidently said yes.

THE MORNING THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
The following morning, I woke up unusually early.
It was just 4:00 a.m.
Sitting quietly on my bed, I stared at the beautiful platinum engagement ring on my finger. Although I was never someone who loved wearing rings, I couldn't stop admiring it.
Joy filled my heart.
Eventually, I prepared for my morning devotion.
After worshipping with great enthusiasm, I began praying. As usual, I sang one of my favorite hymns before intercession.
Not what I wished to be,
Nor where I wished to go,
For who am I that I should choose my way?
The Lord shall choose for me;
It's better, that I know.
So let Him bid me go or stay.
I had sung those words countless times before.
But that morning...
Every single line suddenly became real.
As I prayed, I clearly sensed the Lord speaking to my heart.
"Daughter, he is your choice—not Mine."
My heart froze.
Then came another statement that completely shattered my excitement.
"If you truly know My will for your life, then you will know Matthew is not even halfway there."
WHEN GOD'S ANSWER BREAKS YOUR HEART
I broke down in tears.
"Lord...if not Matthew, then who?"
How could someone so perfect not be God's choice for me?
I could not understand it.
The disappointment was overwhelming.
Then I sensed His gentle reassurance.
"I will comfort you. Within one day, you will know whom I have chosen. But first, spend time praying until your own desires die and My will becomes your greatest desire."
Those words pierced my heart.
I knew this would not be an easy journey.
GOD REVEALED SOMEONE I NEVER EXPECTED
I poured out my heart before God.
Gradually, my personal ambitions began to fade.
Then, with remarkable clarity, I saw the person God was pointing me toward.
Dave.
My heart immediately resisted.
"No, Lord!"
Dave was a relatively new member in our church district.
I first met him at Tantalizers, Iwo Road, where we had enjoyed a wonderful conversation. Everything seemed normal until he stood up.
Only then did I notice the braces on his right leg and the crutches resting beside him.
He walked with great difficulty.
At that moment, I had silently thought to myself,
"Whoever marries him will really need God's grace."
Now...
God was telling me that I was the woman.
THE BATTLE BETWEEN FLESH AND SPIRIT
I cried bitterly.
I prayed.
I rebuked every thought.
I rejected it repeatedly.
Yet the more I resisted, the clearer God's direction became.
It was Dave.
Not Matthew.
My emotions screamed no.
But my spirit kept whispering yes.
I had experienced temporary injuries before.
But marrying someone who appeared to have a permanent disability?
To my natural mind, it seemed impossible.
That night, I cried until tissues covered the floor.
MATTHEW'S MESSAGE MADE EVERYTHING WORSE
When I finally looked at my phone, I discovered over fifty missed calls from Matthew.
Then I opened his message.
"LizBae, I miss you so much. What is happening? I hope you're okay. I believe you're praying. Remember, after God's love comes mine. I truly love you. Please call me as soon as you read this."
My heart melted.
I longed to hear his gentle voice.
Everything within me wanted Matthew.
But everything within my spirit pointed somewhere else.
GOD CONFIRMED HIS VOICE AGAIN AND AGAIN
Just then, another message arrived.
It was from my spiritual mother.
She simply wrote,
"Liz, do whatever He asks you to do. He cannot be wrong. Only you can."
I was stunned.
How could she possibly know what I was going through?
I hadn't discussed it with anyone.
Not even Matthew.
Still trying to process everything, I walked into the sitting room where my elderly grandmother called me over.
Looking directly into my eyes, she quietly said,
"Nobody is too ugly, too poor, too uneducated, or too disabled to become your husband if God chooses him for you. Don't struggle with God."
Those words broke me completely.
I collapsed onto the floor in tears.
At that moment, I knew God had spoken once again.
The Bible says:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." — Proverbs 3:5–6
ONE FINAL TEST
Determined to settle the matter once and for all, I carried my Bible and went to my church district.
I apologized to God for resisting His will.
Then I made a vow.
"Lord, today is a busy day in church. Whoever walks into this auditorium first after I begin praying—whether Matthew or Dave—I will accept as Your will for my life."
For almost three hours, I prayed sincerely.
No one entered.
Relieved, I concluded my prayers.
"For in Jesus' Name..."
Before I could finish...
A loud voice echoed behind me.
"Amen!"
I recognized the voice immediately.
Matthew.
My heart skipped... But one question remained...
If Matthew truly wasn't God's will for my life...Why was he the one standing there?

CONCLUSION
One of the greatest mistakes a believer can make is allowing emotions, appearance, or personal preferences to override God's direction. What seems perfect to human eyes may not align with God's perfect plan.
The journey of choosing God's will in marriage often requires surrender, humility, patience, and unwavering trust. Although God's instructions may sometimes challenge our natural understanding, His plans always lead to our ultimate good.
As Isaiah 55:8–9 reminds us:
"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways," declares the Lord.
God sees what we cannot see. He knows tomorrow before we experience today.
